Getting to and from the Canadian Grand Prix Circuit
The Gilles Villeneuve Circuit lies on the island of îles Notre Dame, on the St. Laurence River, just near downtown Montreal. Montreal is blessed with easy and convenient public transportation, making access to the track cheap and simple.
The track is located in a very tranquil part of the city and is easily accessible via foot from Sainte-Hèl?ne Island, simply cross the du Cosmos bridge near the Biosphere or cross over the Pont de îles. The island offers many attractions that are worth a visit, such as the biosphere, beach, the Floralies Gardens and Olympic Stadium.
The circuit is located within walking distance of the île St. Helen underground metro station. The metro (Line 4) runs from the city (Berri) to Jean Drapeau station, a 20 minute ride. For those taking the bus, Bus 167 runs directly to the circuit. However, leave ample time, as some seats in the grandstands can be up to 2km (1.2mi) away from the metro station.
For those driving, the circuit is easily accessible via the De la Concorde Bridge and Jacques-Cartier Bridge (exit Jean Drapeau) or from the South Shore. However, parking may be a problem during the Grand Prix weekend, as there is little parking offered on the island, unless you hold a disabled sticker. It is best to leave your car behind and use public transport to get to the circuit.
Montreal is served by two major international airports: Dorval and Mirabel airports. Dorval airport is located 18km (11mi) west of Montreal's city centre. Mirabel airport is located 53km (33mi) north-west of the city. Both airports have frequent shuttle buss services direct to the city centre, from there it's easy to take the metro or bus to the racing circuit.
In 2002, a new attendance record was established with 326,000 spectators for the three days of the Canadian Grand Prix event.
